In this essay i will talk about two values, citizenship and commitment and how they can be related to the story The Raven by writer Edgar Allan Poe. This story talks about a man’s life while in grief of a person he lost, it is not said their relationship but it is shown that it is a woman, and how it applies to a situation, where a black raven enters from his window into his study and only answers to his questions with the words Nevemore. This story shows obsession, sadness, grief, and insanity over a situation a person can not control. Im going to start with the first value, citizenship, that means the character of an individual viewed as a member of society; behavior in terms of the duties, obligations, and functions of a citizen. I think this value does not apply to this story in any way because the meaning does not match the theme or what the author is trying to teach or talk about in this story, the characters do not show any traits of citizenship but it does not deny them either way, i just feel that the value is not in the story at all. The country where the character belongs to is also not mentioned in the story, except if we assume that the character is the author himself and investigate where he was born. The story’s main subject is about grief, it is more personal and more intimate than what citizenship is, it also has a darker tone and aura, mysterious vibes than what a story that would talk about citizenship would have. The value is not mentioned, pointed at, indicated or can even be inferred even by a careful and analytical reader, that is why i think it does not have anything to do with the story or what it talks about. The next value we have is commitment. A commitment is something which regularly takes up some of your time because of an agreement you have made or because of responsibilities that you have. When you make a commitement, you promise someone or even yourself, that you will do something, so they start to depend on you for that. Again, for me, i believe that this value is not talked about in the story at all. Commitment is something that is agreed or involves two people, and the only two active or main characters in the story are the narrator of the story and the raven, and they do not a committed relationship, as shown by the Raven’s maddening responses to the narrators questions and the impatience and hatred that the author shows the bird in the ending part of the story. There is also no commitment shown in the story between the author and his late loved one, Lenore. For me, none of these values are present in the story and have no correlation between the meanings and the story’s theme. There are many values that do belong to this story, but are not necessarily in a positive way , since the author uses a gloomy and sad tone to express troubled emotions and fright, like persistence, shown in here as extreme obsession, wonder, shown in the story as all the questions the main character has about the raven, along with a lot others. In conclusion to this essay, the two values that where presented to us have no relation to the story, are not present in it or even mentioned or talked about. This story is not ideal for people who wish to learn the values of citizenship and commitment.
